Believe Him Or Not

More than a year and a half later, Chris Colabello is still looking for answers.

The 2015 Blue Jays season was magical on many fronts. As a team, they reached the postseason for the first time since 1993, and many individuals contributed to that success along the way.

Chris Colabello was a huge part of that, setting career highs in every offensive category. While he hit 15 homers, it was his .321 avg, that was most impressive.

Not only was he getting it done on the field, his personality and character won over fans and  media folks like myself.

After all those years of independent ball and the minor leagues, Chris Colabello was a true major leaguer and was looked at as a big part of the Blue Jays moving forward. It was a story we all latched onto; all that hard work had finally paid off.

Then 2016 came around and everything quickly spiralled downhill. He began the season knowing he had tested positive for a banned substance and as each day went by, he wondered if today was the day he’d receive that call from the league. Unbeknownst to the rest of us, his mind was constantly swirling and while he put on a brave face, those of us who saw him everyday knew something wasn’t right. His numbers clearly showed it too.

This took an immense toll on him because he had no idea how the metabolite entered his system, and to this day he’s still trying to figure it out.

I’m going to stop right there and let many of you chuckle at what I just wrote. Those of you who think Chris is guilty, and is making this all up, are likely looking at me as naive and gullible. I may never convince you as to why I believe Chris, but I have from day one, and remain convinced that one day he will prove the naysayers wrong.

Chris knows the facts…we all do. What I know is that Chris is an intelligent man, who spent years working his ass off to make it to the majors. He had been tested on multiple occasions and passed them all, including prior to and during the 2015 season. Why would anyone in their right mind mess around with something during spring training, when they know they will be tested? Why would Chris, after achieving so much, clean, choose now to start juicing?

I know what many of you are thinking. If he didn’t knowingly ingest it, how did it get there? That’s what Chris is still trying to understand. Did someone spike his drink? Did he accidently sip from the wrong bottle? Chris didn’t even take approved supplements, so how it got there remains a mystery.

All that aside, I believe him, because he says he’s innocent. There you go, shaking your head again. If he told me he was Santa Clause, would I believe that too? Well..maybe.

Here’s the thing, first of all, Chris has served his suspension and is fully aware that many will always look at him as guilty and a liar. If he did indeed knowingly juice up, it would be in his best interests to just admit it . His good friend Steve Delabar did just that and has moved forward. Chris could do the same, but he won’t admit guilt to something he didn’t do. Why would any sane minded person go through all the stress and bother if he wasn’t telling the truth? He has absolutely nothing to gain by lying.

I really hope he gets to the bottom of this and clears his name. For those who have stuck by him, he’s very thankful. For those that dumped on him the day the positive test was announced, he’d love nothing more than to prove them all wrong.

2015 was such an amazing year for Jays fans and Chris provided many of those moments. Here’s to wishing he makes it back to the majors this year and shows everyone that the numbers he put up in ‘15 were neither a fluke or a product of cheating.
